Established in 1891, Woodland Park is a city where modern convenience blends well with historic charm. The location of Woodland Park is its greatest asset. The city is located on a high, broad plateau between 8,200 and 9,000 feet above sea level and offers one of the best views of Pikes Peak.
The historic town of Woodland Park is the scenic gateway to most of the Colorado ski slopes. You'll enjoy mostly sunshine days, above the clouds, winter and summer. Also, it is on the main route to Deckers and the South Platte River which is regarded as one of the premier fishing streams in the state.
Summer recreational activities include hiking, back-packing, camping, cycling, four-wheeling, horseback-riding, picnicking, rodeos, sight-seeing, and fishing. up Rampart Range Road between Woodland Park and Colorado Springs lies Rampart Reservoir. The city and the U.S. Forest Service have opened the lake for fisherman and picnickers.
Mueller State Park is only about 5 miles from the small town of Divide. It anchors at the west side of Pikes Peak and extends over 5,000 acres across some of the most gorgeous land in the state. The park offers visitors camping, hiking, biking, and more in spectacular forested areas with modern facilities, A popular wildlife watching area, Mueller is home to elk, black bear, eagles and hawks.
High in the Rockies on the southwest side of Pikes Peak, the city of Victor is filled with historic gold rush days buildings, mine structures and homes. Victor had its glory days as a gold mining town around the turn of the century when the gold rush brought thousands to the area. Trains transported miners back and forth to Cripple Creek and Colorado Springs.
Gold fever put Cripple Creek on the map in 1890. The district's mines are reponsible for making the area the fourth largest producing gold camp in the world. Cripple Creek is one of three Colorado cities to have limited-stakes gambling. While the golden history of Cripple Creek lures many, thousands also flock to Cripple Creek to try their luck at a different venture.
The Florissant Fossil Beds are world-renowned, and in 1969 were set aside as a part of our National Park System Located in a beautiful mountain valley just west of Pikes Peak and not far from the town of Florissant itself, it holds spectacular remnants of the earth's prehistoric life. Huge petrified redwoods and incredibly detailed fossils of ancient insects and plants reveal a very different Colorado of long ago.
