WELCOME TO THE UTE PASS AREA - Cascade, Crystal, Green Mountain Falls, Chipita Park

These four hamlets - Crystola, Cascade, Green Mountain Falls and Chipita Park - form the communities of Ute Pass. History is their baseline for individualism and uniqueness. Today, they are communities of residents who are "Mountain People" and who bask in the quiet of life outside the city. Diversity unites these foothill communities. For Ute Pass communities, there is no downtown business district that gathers its residents together. Instead, the local volunteer fire departments and occasional church/school groups serve as the community bond. No all-night convenience stores flash neon in the surrounding forests. Hiking trails, turn-of-the-century homes, open fields of flowers and modern homes for "Mountain People" make Ute Pass an extraordinary place. As a Pikes Peak mountain resort, it is unsurpassed in history and in its Rocky Mountain beauty

Few communities can lay claim to psychics as the reason their community was founded. Crystola can. With its unique birth in the 1870s by a man who claimed his East-coast psychic led him to the settlement, to its town government led by psychics, and later to Saturday-evening seances, Crystola has remained a spectacular find. Just outside Woodland Park, it retains its individuality and character as well as any Ute Pass community. Crystola Canyon, located just off Highway 24, is testimony to both the beauty and the ruggedness of Ute Pass.

Kansas tourists discovered the rolling hills surrounding Cascade in the 1800s. For Cascade, that's its history, and for Cascade, some things have not changed. Thirsty travelers enjoyed libations there on their trek through the pass, and today Cascade is still on the tourist loop - Santa's Workshop and a sprinkling of restaurants and bed-and-breakfast accommodations. For many, the Chapel of the Holy Rosary beckons with its stained glass windows and German organ, both reminders of early century sophistication in the mining communities of Ute Pass.

The legendary P.T. Barnum was an early visitor to Green Mountain Falls. But in Green Mountain Falls, the anchor is not, however, Mr. Barnum, but rather the lake and gazebo. From there a hiker of any ability can follow the meandering paths to Crystal or Catamount Falls. Some Victorian homes are preserved, and surrounding the Gazebo and Lake are small locally owned restaurants, motels and a general store.

Chipita Park is named for another famous figure - the wife of the Ute Chief Ouray. Chipita Park is equally noted in Colorado history. For hundreds of years, Ute Indians blazed a trail up and down the pass, led by Chief Ouray. In 1927, the community was renamed Chipita Park to honor Ouray's wife, and today's inhabitants continue in an unhurried setting just off the busy U.S. 24 Highway.
