WELCOME TO THE TRI LAKES AREA - Monument, Palmer Lake, Woodmoor, Kings Deer,
Just north of Colorado Springs lie the communities of the Tri-Lakes region: Palmer Lake, Monument, and Woodmoor. These communities are booming - bustling with activity and growth, augmenting the rich histories they have to tell. The area was first settled in the 1860s. Palmer Lake was, at first, the only lake in the Tri-Lakes region. This spring-fed lake was named Summit Lake by Colonel Henry Dodge when he mapped the area in 1835. Monument Lake was developed with the completion of the Monument Dam in 1861, and Lake Woodmoor was later created in the 1960s.
The town of Monument was incorporated in 1879 and depended a great deal on summer tourism and a winter ice industry, supplying ice from the lake to nearby cities and towns. With the coming of the Denver & Rio Grande railroad, it soon became a shipping center for lumber, grains and vegetables. Potatoes became a cash crop for the fertile Monument Valley until a blight of insects permanently halted growth a few years later. The entire Tri-Lakes area has always been a getaway and historic hotels and buildings still line the streets of the towns of Monument and Palmer Lake.
Palmer Lake is the beginning of the 14-mile Santa Fe Regional Trail. The trail is one of the largest continuous trails in El Paso County, running south through Monument to the southern boundary of the Air Force Academy, into Colorado Springs and scheduled to continue to Fountain in the most southerly part of the County. The trail route follows the abandoned Atkinson, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad right-of-way. Other unique features of Palmer Lake include the Christmas Star on Sundance Mountain. The five-pointed star is lighted for the month of December and on other special occasions such as the release of the hostages in Iran and the end of Desert Storm. The star dates back to 1934. and continues to be a symbol of hope and inspiration to the many motorists who pass by on I-25 and the planes that fly close enough to see it.
Woodmoor Lake is predominate at the entrance to the community of Woodmoor. The residential community of Woodmoor and the many small and unique subdivisions that surround it are beautiful areas of upscale homes nestled in the pines on large and private lots. Woodmoor and the neighboring Kings Deer are golf communities and their courses provide some of the areas best views of the front range within the serenity of majestic pines. Because of its prime location near the cities of Colorado Springs and Denver, the beauty and peacefulness of the area, and marvelous Summer arts festivals and community events, the Tri Lakes continue to attract residents and tourists alike.
